
David Winans
Topping an esteemed list of artists that have kept the legacy of their families alive, David Winans is a true sensation. Adding more feathers to his cap of accomplishments, this dynamic artist uses soul-stirring vocals and song writing skills to craft magnetic musical compositions. David Winans has made for himself a formidable name in the industry in a very short span, due to his pure talent.
David Winans comes from the Grammy Award-winning musical family “The Winans’”. Belonging to such an accomplished family brings with it responsibilities in addition to opportunities. The talented artist uses all this to propel his career in the right direction.
David Winans started out as a guitarist and vocalist in his family’s projects. During that time, he headed a progressive rock band called “Xairia” in Los Angeles. The songs composed by the band at that time are available on Podomatic.com under ‘The Xairia Archives‘.
It was on one of the his world tours that he met guitarist Greg Nelson and drummer Darrin Wardlaw, the artists who would form the iconic band “pi”, later re-named “David Winans’ pi”. Other members joining later included Marq Andrew Speck on keyboards, Vern Springer and David Staub on guitars, drummer Steve Badalament, and Cheryl Dixon-Bailey and Kymberli Wright as background vocalists. David himself plays keyboards and bass in addition to being the lead vocalist.
David has performed at various venues across the world, including the London-Royal Albert Hall in Manchester, Essex Stadium, The Volkshaus in Zurich and The Hague in Denmark. He has also showcased his talent twice at the Grammys. He worked with top artists in the industry such as Mark Farner, Ed Cassidy, Buddy Miles, and Michael Jackson.
His most successful project to date is with his current band “pi”. They have released two albums called “Songs from The X-Files” and “Psalms”, available on digital platforms as well as CDs. Together, the group has won 10 Detroit Music Awards in various categories, including ‘Outstanding Recording’, ‘Outstanding Performance’, and ‘Outstanding Instrumentalist’.
Some of his releases are ‘Will You Bring Me There Again’ with Joya Koch, ‘Psalms 23 Bach Partita in Bb’ and ‘Limelight – Firelight’ with Veech Malone.
David’s songs touch upon a variety of themes. “Limelight- Firelight” is about politics, love and hope. “Thank You For Saving Me” appeals to religious individuals and is about the current Covid situation while “Rio Sur” reflects the ‘Sermon on the Mount’.
His love for music groups is evident from his favorite musicians. These include Jon Anderson & Chris Squire, Gentle Giant – The Shulman Brothers as well as the rock edge of Led Zepplin.
Moving forward, Winans is planning a tour and expects to make an even bigger impact in both movies and social media.
